From San Francisco's Golden
Gate bridge, past the sheer cliffs of Big Sur to
the sun-drenched beaches of Southern California,
the views along the 644 miles of Highway 1 are
breathtaking. The views of the Pacific crashing
against the shore compete with the rugged beauty
of the mountains, forests and gentle hills of
California's Central Coast. No wonder economists
estimate that the Highway brings several billion
dollars in tourism to the state every
year.
Beautiful? Absolutely.
No wonder engineers have
found a way to take the road where no road was
meant to go—across protected wetlands, over deep
arroyos, and through active landslide areas, not
to mention the earthquake faults. Highway 1 is
in a constant struggle to survive. Cal Trans
(California Department of Transportation) is
constantly rebuilding the road after the
adjacent mountain slides into the ocean, taking
chunks of the Highway with it.
If a mudslide takes the road
out, they can always rebuild it. But what about
the homes the mudslides destroy? Replacing a
section of road is one thing, but a home is
another. Homes are filled with memories,
irreplaceable keepsakes and our loved ones.
Homes can't be replaced simply by building a new
house.
Wisdom dictates that builders
choose a solid surface, not a shifting one for a
building's foundation. To know the importance of
a solid foundation and choose a shifting one is
foolish, and will result in destruction.

A Phoenix investment group
recently hired a demolition crew to tear down a
vacant, boarded up house in southwest Phoenix.
They planned to sell the property or perhaps
build a new home on the lot. Unfortunately, the
demolition crew mixed up the addresses and tore
down the wrong house.
The house that was destroyed
belonged to Jenny Lopez. She had lived in the
house for thirty years, though at the time, it
was also vacant. Lopez’s family was using their
house to store household belongs and had hoped
to sell it.
One of Lopez’s old neighbors
saw the construction equipment in her yard and
alerted her family. By the time the family
arrived, the demolition was complete.
The house numbers in the
neighborhood are not well marked and all the
mailboxes are on one side of the street, which
made identifying the house difficult. The house
that was supposed to have been torn down was
across the street for Lopez’s house. The foreman
in charge of the demolition crew did not comment
about the mistake, but did tell a local

Two things strike me about
the President's comments. First, it is clear
that our President is not exclusively depending
upon military might to win this war on
terrorism. He said that God is not neutral
between justice and cruelty and freedom and
fear. I'm encouraged that our President
understands that military might cannot thwart
the purposes of God, but that it can be used by
God to administer His justice.
The second thing that
impresses me about our President's conclusion to
his speech is that he ended it with a prayer. He
said, "may God grant us wisdom, and may He watch
over the United States of America." And to that
prayer I say Amen.
James 3:13-18 "Who among you

jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is

The pathology report
confirmed Darrell & Kathryn’s worst
nightmare, Kathryn had stage 3C Papillary
Cirrus, a high grade cancer. The doctor
outlined an aggressive approach of treatment and
they consented. Soon, the hospital would release
her to go home for a week, and then they’d begin
phase two of the treatment: chemotherapy.
On Saturday, Darrell did something that he knew
he shouldn’t do, he went online and typed
“Primary Peritoneal” into a search engine.
He was overwhelmed with the results, 100%
terminal!
Kathryn reacted to the
second treatment of chemotherapy. She became
violently ill--vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty
breathing—the works. Is this what life is
going to be like? Darrell thought. I
don’t know if I can do this. Darrell hit a
wall. He didn’t know what else to do, so
he prayed. “Give me strength God,” he
prayed, “I can’t do this on my own.” There
was plenty in Darrell’s life that he couldn’t
change. He couldn’t change the fact that
Kathryn had a terminal form of cancer, or that
if the disease didn’t kill her, it looked like
the cure would. He couldn’t change his own
limitations. He wasn’t a nurse, he didn’t
know how to be a nurse, and he didn’t know if he
had the strength to be a nurse anyway.
Darrell needed the courage to change what he
could. But most of all, Darrell needed
wisdom. In this moment, he didn’t know if he
should try to keep her at home or whether he
should take her back to the hospital.
There would be psychological consequences in
taking Kathryn to the hospital; it would be
taking a step backward. Darrell knew that
it could crush her morale. What should he
do?
Darrell prayed for wisdom.
They admitted Kathryn into
the hospital and Darrell stayed until almost
midnight, and then went home to get some rest.
At 1:00 am the hospital called. They’d
moved Kathryn to the ICU because of shortness of
breath and a very low heart rate. “There’s
no reason for you to come in,” the nurse said,
“we just wanted you to know. She’s in good
hands.” Darrell drifted back to sleep only
to be awaken 3 hours later. “Your wife has
thrown two massive emboli—blood clots, we need
your permission to do a procedure on her.
If we do, there is a 10% chance she won’t make
it.” The nurse said. “What if we do
nothing?” Darrell asked. “If you do
nothing, she will die.”
Darrell consented, got
dressed and went to the hospital as fast as he
could. He didn’t know if he’d ever see his
wife again. By 10:00 am, the doctor came
to the waiting room to give Darrell the
verdict. “God must be looking out for
Kathryn," The doctor said. “Why do you say
that?" Darrell asked. “If she had not been
admitted when she was, you would not have had
time to get her here when this happened. She
would have died.”

Tammy had a hard time
finding the school building many mornings,
resulting in truancy. Up until 10:00 pm,
the night before graduation, it didn’t look like
she’d graduate, but at the final hour, she
turned in her missing assignments and graduated
with her classmates.
At her graduation, Ron was
shocked to see her walk in with the
valedictorian and class president. What he
didn’t know was that the school administrators
had asked her to sing the National Anthem.
As she approached the microphone to sing, the
five-thousand people in attendance went
wild. Tears formed in Ron’s eyes, he was
proud of his little girl. He wasn’t going
to let everything else that was going on in her
life rob him of this moment of pride. He
relished it. He deserved it.
A local amusement park had
a talent show, which Tammy won, hands
down. “She’s the most talented person
we’ve heard in twelve years” the organizer of
the event said, and then offered her a job
singing and being an ambassador for the
park. She took the job, but was fired a
week later for coming to work late and
neglecting her duties. That was fine with her;
she got another job singing with a band from the
area and started playing the local nightclub
scene. That’s when it happened. She
started using marijuana, but she soon graduated
to harder drugs.
She was married for the
first time, while she was four months
pregnant. “For the sake of the baby”
Ronald helped Tammy and her new husband
establish themselves. He put a $10,000
down payment on a furnished mobile home.
Soon, her husband bailed, but she replaced
husband #1 with a live-in boyfriend, who
returned her kindness by knocking her up again.
The drugs continued.
Problems escalated. Child Protective Services
removed the children from the home due to
neglect and Animal Control took their dog away
for the same reason. Tammy’s Mother-in-law hired
a lawyer and got custody of the children. Ronald
paid $2500.00 to clean the trailer—it was a
mess, dog feces everywhere. They’d stripped its
appliances, even the air conditioner and sold
these things for drug money. Ronald paid
another $1500.00 to get out of the contract.
Ron prayed. He was
desperate for wisdom. He needed to know
when helping isn’t helping. He wasn’t a
wealthy man. $14,000 was a significant
amount of money, but he didn’t want to see his
little girl live like this either. Should
he just accept the situation, or was there
something else he could do?
As he prayed, he knew that
he couldn’t change his daughter. He had no
control over her drug addiction, inability to
hold a job, dishonesty, inability to care for
her own children, lack of spiritual concern or
ability to support herself.
Tammy’s third marriage
ended like the other two and she is living with
another man. “But the reality is that she
is still our daughter and they are still our
grandchildren.” Ron says. The oldest
grandchild just joined the Marines. When
he heard the news, Ron was proud.
Actually, he hadn’t been that proud in years,
not since his daughter sang the National Anthem
at her graduation.
But he also knew there were
some things that he could do and he prayed for
the courage to do them. After her second
marriage failed, she came home to live with
them. Ron and his wife saw that she got
some counseling and encouragement. They
saw that she saw a doctor, who diagnosed her as
a manic-depressive and began treating her for
her problem.
Ron also prayed for
wisdom. He knew that he and his wife had
done the best they could with all three of their
girls. One of them is wayward.
There’s nothing they could do to change that,
but they could see that they didn’t enable her
disease. They breathe a prayer for wisdom
every time she asks for something else, and God
answers their prayer.
“Our lives and commitment
to God must continue,” Ron says, “We cling to
each other, and we cling to our faith.”
Sometimes that’s the wisest
thing a person can do.

In His book, Restoration Road, author Mitch
Kruse encourages readers to allow the Lord to
take on a path that leads us back to His divine
plan. One of the first steps is to recognize the
value of godly wisdom. Mitch writes, “Money is
pride’s measurement of our giftedness (time,
talent, and treasure). Wisdom is humility’s
measurements of our godliness (Christ in us).
Although the Bible often comments on money, it
is the latter commodity that we are advised to
pursue repeatedly throughout Scripture.
Wisdom is the intersection of the vertical with
the horizontal. It is God’s heart (vertical)
combined with street smarts (horizontal). Wisdom
applies one’s relationship with God to one’s
relationships with others, including the tasks
to be achieved. We were designed to have a heart
for wisdom. We were designed to desire wisdom.
We were designed to pursue wisdom with our three
resources of this life. Wisdom begins with a
humble, malleable, clay-like heart toward God.”

Scientists studying a star in a nearby galaxy

age.” He added, ”R136a1 is already middle aged

If you ask them, police in Portland, Oregon say
they know it’s an old joke, but they really
don’t know why the chicken crossed the road
either. When they received a call, officers were
dispatched to check on a report of a chicken
crossing a local highway during rush-hour. The
caller said the bird was causing a traffic
hazard, so police went to remove it. Later, they
released a statement saying they were unable to
locate the bird and that animals in a roadway
were no laughing matter. A spokesman said
officers regularly tend to duck crossings, and
have rescued ducklings form storm drains. He
said this was the first time they had received a
serious call about a chicken trying to cross the
road. Officers will remain on a lookout for the
bird he said, and added, for the time being,
officers were unable to determine the chicken’s
intent.—Jim L. Wilson and Jim Sandell

One of the terms of Colleen Cudney’s probation
for her 2012 DUI conviction is that she is not
supposed to drink at all, and must take random
breathalyzer tests. Recently she boasted on her
facebook page that she passed the test, though
she’d consumed alcohol the day before.
What she didn’t think about before posting her
boast, was that facebook is a public
forum. She now has a court hearing for
violating the terms of her probation.
I can think of two reasons Cudney lacks
wisdom—one is the obvious choice to post her
probation violation in a public forum. The other
is the choice to continue to drink when she
obviously has a problem.

Research indicates that those who study or work
abroad come back with more than a photo album
full of memories and a suitcase full of
souvenirs. These people may also come back with
the ability to think more complexly and
creatively and may be more successful at work as
a result. The study found that people with
international experience or who identify with
more than one nationality tend to be better
problem solvers and display more creativity.
They also tend to be more likely to create new
business products and to get important job
promotions. While the benefit may depend
on how much individuals open themselves to
foreign cultures, researchers say people who
choose to study and work in other countries may
already be inclined to be complex and creative
thinkers. --Jim L. Wilson and Jim Sandell

Several

Maine seeking a solution to a problem that

ago, the green crab, which is native to
Europe, was introduced into the waters around
New England. Since then, the crabs have

industry in the area because the crabs are
relentless predators. To combat the problem,
several groups organized the Green Crab
Working Summit to pool ideas about controlling
the crab population. The ideas presented
included creating a crab cookbook with
suggestions about serving the crustaceans or
using them as bait to catch other gourmet

Research from the

a good practice to avoid making important
decisions on an empty stomach. Director of the
study, Dr. Benjamin Vincent said they
discovered that hunger alters people’s
decision making process, because they become
more impatient and more likely to settle for a
small reward sooner that a larger one at a
later time. Researchers asked questions when
participants were not hungry and when they had
skipped a meal. The question involved
decisions about food, money, and other
rewards.Vincent said hungry people tended to
settle for smaller food incentives that were
provided sooner, and the thought process
carried over to financial and interpersonal
decisions. He said this thinking pattern could
lead people to make short term decisions that
made their situation worse. Vincent added, “We
found there was a large effect, people’s
preferences shifted dramatically from the long
term to the short term when hungry. This is an
aspect of human behavior which could
potentially be exploited by marketers so
people need to know their preference may
change when hungry.”—Jim L. Wilson and Jim
