STRUGGLES
The Philadelphia Foundation has awarded 7-year-old
Alexandria Scott its “Philanthropist of the year” award. The young girl has
raised more than $80,000 for cancer research selling cups of lemonade from a
stand in her front yard.
Alexandria only has strength to put up her stand a few times
a year because she also suffers from cancer. Two days before her first
birthday, Doctor’s discovered a growth on the girl’s spine, which turned out to
neuroblastoma, a potentially deadly form of cancer that primarily affects
babies and small children. Though doctors removed 90 percent of the cancer, the
growth persisted and had to stabilize with experimental radioactive iodine
treatments.
While Alex was in the hospital, she came up with the idea
for the lemonade stand, saying she wanted to give the money to the hospital. On
her first Saturday, Alex raised $2,000. Her latest sale netted $14,000 despite
nonstop rain that forced her to pitch a tent.
Among the donations was a $500 check from the Philadelphia
76ers basketball team.
Phil Arkow of the Philadelphia Foundation say, “When life
gives you lemons you should make lemonade, and that’s exactly what this little
girl has done.”

you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith
develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be
mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
