PERSPECTIVE

Six weeks before her wedding, Kyle Paxman learned her fiancé was cheating on her. When the family began to try and cancel their elaborate plans, they discovered the family stay had to pay for several things, including a reception. Paxman said, "The dress had arrived, the flowers were done, the menus were chosen. One hundred And eighty guests had tickets from all over the country and the Virgin Islands to come and make a weekend of my wedding." Since they had already spent the money, Paxman and her family decided to put the things they had purchased to good use. They turned the planned wedding reception into a charity benefit. Paxman said, "How do you turn something around? We needed to turn this into something positive and start the healing process."

Paxman did not know whether her former fiancé knew what she was doing, but said his parents were aware of the benefit but had not been invited because it would been difficult for them to attend. She says after the event she will take her mother to Tahiti on the trip that supposed to be her honeymoon. Appearing before her guests, Paxman said, "It's going to be hard, or course, but the end of my story now isn't so awful."

Ephesians 5:16-17 (GW) "Make the most of your opportunities because these are evil days. [17] So don't be foolish, but understand what the Lord wants."

PERSPECTIVE

Due to recent shifts in magnetic north, authorities are warning everyone who uses a compass to exercise caution.  Movement of the planet’s core of hot liquid iron causes the position of magnetic north to drift somewhat. The concern is that over the past century the change has been increasing in speed. While they admit the movement is part of natural cycle and could change, experts say magnetic north is currently shifting at a rate of 40 miles per year.

The shift in magnetic north will impact boaters, pilots, hikers, and anyone who uses a compass as backup to modern GPS systems. The changes in orientation are costing the aviation and marine industries millions of dollars. Recently, the Palm Beach International Airport paid over $268,000 to repaint runway numbers, replace signs and update publications. Many other airports plan similar changes to keep runways designations close to what the compass indicates.  The updated information is necessary to ensure travelers get where they intend to go. Matthew Brock, a technician with a Florida firm that repairs compasses says, “You could end up a few miles off or a couple hundred miles off, depending how far you’re going.”

Hebrews 12:2 (HCSB) keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.

PERSPECTIVE

The Disgusting Food Museum has opened in Malmo, Sweden. It features 80 foods from 35 countries considered disgusting by others. There is a maggot-infested cheese from Sardinia and durian, a stinky Southeast Asian fruit that airlines have banned on some flights. Surströmming is a Swedish fermented herring that the museum allows you to smell. The reaction is such that your entrance ticket doubles as a vomit bag.

Everybody does not always view things through the same lens. What tastes good and bad is a matter of perspective, sometimes personal sometimes cultural. The same is true of other matters of perspective, such as music, worship styles, time preferences, clothes, cars, houses, etc. Our responsibility is to, as best we can, look past our own perspectives and see things from God’s perspective. There are two American food items in the display. We might argue if Twinkies are somewhat disgusting but who in the world doesn’t like Root Beer? —Jim L. Wilson and Rodger Russell.
