During the stress filled days leading up to Christmas, British
farmers are playing recordings to keep their turkeys calm, and hopefully
increase profits. Farmers have long believed that covering up the sounds of
farmyard life is good for the birds. There is already some evidence that
turkeys and other produce birds like to listen to the radio. This year
researchers hope to learn which types of music or sounds are most effective.
Geof Hemus is playing recordings of Georgian chants, whale
calls, and rustling sounds to his 3,500 birds. He says, “At first they seemed
rather bemused and started gobbling more. They didn't chill out, lie down and
cross their legs. But then they got their confidence back.” He adds, “If they
are less stressed, they eat more and put on more pounds."

I guess British farmers are working on a variation of
William Congreve’s belief that “Music soothes the savage beast.” Not only does
it calm the savage beast and farmyard animals, music has an amazing effect on
us.
1 Samuel 16:23 NIV “Whenever the spirit from God came upon
Saul, David would take his harp and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he
would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.”

Technology that is used to keep birds away from a bus
station in North Carolina may soon be employed to keep away other unwanted
creatures.
Officials at Trade Street Station in Charlotte, North
Carolina currently use the station’s loudspeakers to emit the calls of hawks
and owls to frighten away pigeons that roost in the rafters. Now, they plan to
use the sound system to play classical music and smooth jazz to discourage
loitering teenagers.
A spokeswoman told a local newspaper, “The idea is to make
the atmosphere at the Trade Street station less pleasant for those who aren’t
there to catch a bus. We know if we play a certain genre, people won’t want to
hang around.”

Music is a powerful medium that can attract or repel people.
What kind of music we choose to sing may, more than any other choice, signal
who we will attract, and who we will drive away.
1 Chron. 23:5-6 NASB and 4,000 were gatekeepers, and 4,000
were praising the Lord with the instruments which David made for giving praise.
[6] And David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi:
Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
