LUCK
I'm confident that Dona Highstone wasn't happy when she
heard that incumbent Katherine Dunton, her opponent for a seat on a rural
school board passed away, but it had to cross her mind that she had a good
chance of winning the election.
She was wrong. When all the votes were counted it was a tie.
No problem, right, the election commission would just give
the seat to the living candidate, right? Not exactly. Following protocol, they
flipped a coin. Dona, the living candidate called heads—it was tails. She lost.
Now the school board has to find a replacement for Dunton,
the deceased winner.
