LEADERSHIP

Condoleezza Rice recently said, “Power is nothing unless you can turn it into influence.”

—Reader’s Digest, November 2002, p. 73. Illustration by Jim L. Wilson

What are you doing with the power you have because of your position, education or friendships to influence others to follow Christ?

Esther 4:14 NASB "For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father's house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?"

LEADERSHIP

Roger Staubach said, "The most important qualities of leadership are trust and integrity across the board. That doesn't mean a leader has to be perfect, but how he handles things is critical, and that's what leadership is."

Rosalynn Carter said, “ leaders take people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.”

—Reader’s Digest, Jan 03, p. 57 Illustration by Jim L. Wilson

Numbers 14:6-10 (NLT) “Two of the men who had explored the land, Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, tore their clothing. [7] They said to the community of Israel, ‘The land we explored is a wonderful land! [8] And if the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us safely into that land and give it to us. It is a rich land flowing with milk and honey, and he will give it to us! [9] Do not rebel against the Lord, and don't be afraid of the people of the land. They are only helpless prey to us! They have no protection, but the Lord is with us! Don't be afraid of them!’ [10] But the whole community began to talk about stoning Joshua and Caleb. Then the glorious presence of the Lord appeared to all the Israelites from above the Tabernacle.”

LEADERSHIP

University of California at Berkeley Sociologists (Michael Hout and Claude Fischer) noted that "Americans who claim no religious preference rose from around 7% at the beginning of the decade to around 14% at the end of the decade. They concluded that the change did not necessarily reflect a decrease in faith. "One of the points we're trying to make is that most people who have no church still are likely to say things like, 'God is real. Heaven and hell are real." Hout said. Their dissatisfaction isn't with faith or with God, but with the church.

This column led some to think that the church needed to do a better job in its task of proclaiming "the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a world that isn't rejecting faith or God and ask them to put their faith in Christ, not the church, to save their souls."

Amen to that. BUT, UNFORTUNATELY, the thrust of the Berkeley report had a more ominous tone. According to the column, the conclusion of these sociologists was that these "disaffected" worshippers were actually rejecting what they perceived as the "right wing" tendencies of the more conservative churches. Things like pro-life marches and anti-homosexual messages were turning these people off.

In other words, in order to "win" these people back to organized religion, a church would have to endorse homosexuality and abortion. However, there are churches that do just that - they just aren't growing.

When faced with polls like the one from Berkeley, perhaps we should heed the wise words of Harry Truman: "How far would Moses have gone if he had taken a poll in Egypt! What would Jesus Christ have preached if he had taken a poll in the land of Israel? What could have happened to the Reformation if Martin Luther had taken a poll! It isn't polls or public opinion of the moment that counts. It is right and wrong and leadership."

LEADERSHIP

When I was in fifth grade, our teacher took us on a field trip to hear an orchestra play classical music. I didn't necessarily want to hear the music, but knew that even the worst day on a field trip is better than the best day in the classroom.

Shortly after we arrived, the orchestra members began to tune their instruments; the sounds were hideous. But, as the house lights dimmed, the curtain drew open, and the director tapped her baton on the pedestal things changed. With one stroke of her baton, beautiful sounds emerged from the stage.

The director did not need to be holding every instrument. She didn't even need to know how to play every instrument. What she did was direct each performer, organizing the sounds so they could play their beautiful music.

A leader does not have to do everything, nor does he have to know how to do all the functions of the church. He simply needs to be directing the organization under the power of the Holy Spirit.

Together—TOGETHER, submitted to God and seeking His Kingdom, we can change the world!

LEADERSHIP

While in fourth grade, Dave Beckwith delivered newspapers to businesses and the government housing near the airport in Pierre, South Dakota. One afternoon he was pedaling toward the airport when he hit a pothole, crashed his bike and spilled the newspapers all over the highway.

Embarrassed but not hurt, he got up and started gathering the newspapers when a black limousine slowed to a stop, and a man got out of the back seat to help.

"Are you OK?" He asked as he began assisting Dave. The kind man stayed long enough to help Dave and make certain that he was all right.

Dave couldn't help but notice his license plate number: "1." South Dakota Governor Joe Foss was the man that stopped to help. "I knew nothing about his political views," Dave said, "but he was a man of remarkable kindness, and a hero to a nine-year-old boy!"

Later, Dave learned that Joe Foss is a committed Christian. He illustrated what Christ spoke of for a true leader: "He who is greatest among you will be your servant."

LEADERSHIP/EXAMPLE

Administrators of the School District in New Haven, Connecticut are doing something about the childhood obesity problem. They are moving to make their schools “junk-food free,” by snack foods like cookies, candy and soda and offering after school exercise classes and nutrition education for the families of their students.

They know that the kind of change they are trying to effect in their students begins with them. Reginald Mayo, the district's superintendent, is leading by example and is trying to shed 30 pounds by living a healthier lifestyle. “It won't be easy,” he said. Unfortunately, he’s put on two pounds during the first three weeks. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t serious about the change he wants to see in his students and himself. "I'm going to look pretty hypocritical if I'm talking about healthy eating to kids and parents, and I'm walking around at 217 pounds," he said.

Not everyone is applauding Mayo’s efforts. According to Robin Golden, the executive director of business operations for New Haven schools, “The junk food- and soda-stocked vending machines pull in up to $10,000 in extra income for some of the high schools.” This change is testing the value system of the district. Not only are the leaders wrestling with their own need to “practice what they preach,” but their decision could jeopardize their financial health.

"We can't guarantee they won't lose money," said Susan Fiore, a nutrition specialist with the state Department of Education. "But maybe the payoff is worth it for the schools. There's a lot of research out there that kids who eat better learn better, and that's a pretty easy sell."

In an article for "REV Magazine", Robert Johnson, an associate pastor at Windsor Village United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas and the chief strategist of Windsor Village's eChurch leadership development initiative writes, "Leaders fail when their lives are inconsistent with the vision they espouse.I've seen people follow leaders even when the leaders make mistakes. Why?

Because the followers know that the leader burns with real passion and commitment for the vision. However, people won't follow leaders who point in one direction for the followers but commit themselves to another."

When we live what we say we believe, people are willing to follow, but if we are so busy ordering other people's lives that we never get our own life in order, they will ridicule us in private and ignore us in public. Real leadership is consistent.

In his book, "Next Generation Leader", Andy Stanley writes, "Leaders provide a mental picture of a preferred future and then ask people to follow them there. LEADERSHIP
In his book, The Greatest Communicator: What Ronald Reagan Taught Me About Politics, Leadership, and Life, Dick Wirthlin writes, “Leadership, after all, is not raw power. It is not even authority. I define leadership as the power to persuade in ways that change people's lives.”

Romans 12:1-2 (MSG) “So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.”

LEADERSHIP
In his book, Calvin Miller on Leadership, Miller writes, “Servant Leadership is the all-important checkpoint that bridles demonic power. As long as we follow Christ, we are safe! It is impossible to live out Christian servanthood and wield the mace of abusive power."

Mark 9:35 (NIV) Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all."

LEADERSHIP
In the book Christian Reflections on Leadership the Challenge, Kouzes and Posner define leadership as, “A process ordinary people use when they are bringing forth the best from themselves and others.”
--Christian Reflections on Leadership the Challenge, 2. Illustration by Jim L. Wilson and Rowdy Morris.
I like that definition. Because the truth is, we will not bring out the best in those we lead if we aren’t demanding the best from ourselves. The first person we need to point in the right direction is ourselves, then others will be prepared to follow.
Nehemiah 5:9 (MSG) "What you're doing is wrong. Is there no fear of God left in you? Don't you care what the nations around here, our enemies, think of you?

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (KJV) “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. (11) Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? (12) And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

LEADERSHIP

John Maxwell asked God to send leaders to build the church at every one of his pastorates. Maxwell says for fourteen years, at least once a month he would meet someone who was visiting the church for the first time. As they introduced themselves, Maxwell says the Lord would speak to him, saying, “John, there’s one.” He said the experience was very humbling, because he realized he had not done one thing to bring that person to the church. It was completely a work of God.

Later when Maxwell resigned, he had the opportunity to meet seventy-five leaders from his church for a farewell dinner. That night, he told those people how he had prayed for leaders all his life. Then Maxwell went around the room telling each person how God had answered his prayer, and about how God had said, “There’s one.” Maxwell says everyone was in tears by the time he was finished. When someone asked him how he could remember meeting everyone in such a large church, Pastor Maxwell responded, “ I don’t remember meeting every person I remember meeting you because you were one of those people I prayed God would lead into my life.” He concluded with this thought, “If you pray for leaders; if you have a heart to develop, lead, and empower people; if you’ve got a God-given vision, God will give according to your heart’s desires.”

Billy Graham has made the list of the Top 10 Most Admired men in the World again. For the 56th time since he first appeared in 1955, the evangelist ranked among the ten most admired men on a list compiled by a USA Today/Gallup poll. Reverend Graham was tied in the voting for 2013 with presidential candidate Mitt Romney, former President George W. Bush and Pope Benedict XVI. Gallup began taking the survey in 1946 and says they simply ask Americans an open ended question to name the most admired person living in any part of the world. Reverend Graham was one of only three men in the top ten who had no link to the U.S. government or politics. He stands alone in the number of years spent on the list. Former President Ronald Reagan appeared in the poll 31 times, and Pope John Paul II was listed 27 times..—Jim L. Wilson and Jim Sandell.

A six year old boy who listened to the warning siren and insisted that his family get to a safe place probably saved their lives. Six-year-old Brevin Hunter was playing a game on his entertainment console, when he heard the warning siren go off. He immediately told his mother Lisa that they should go to the basement. His mother heard the warning too, but the skies looked calm, so she thought it was a drill, or maybe a mistake. Brevin insisted, so the family of three grabbed a futon and went to the basement. Minutes later a tornado destroyed their duplex, but the family was safe.  Several people who heard the story later said they were certain Brevin’s actions saved his family. When asked about his heroic actions, the young man said, “It was not so hard.” When asked about any regrets, Brevin said he wished he had saved the progress in his video game before leaving. He added, “Now I have to start over.”—Jim L. Wilson and Jim Sandell.

LEADERSHIP

In June of 2014, Mid-Continent University in Mayfield, Kentucky ceased operations after 65 years of Christian Education. This school had served as a training facility for pastors, missionaries, teachers, youth pastors, music ministers, and lay leaders for decades. It served people from several surrounding states and, in its final few years of operation, began training people from other countries as well. It was a beacon of light in a small community.

When the story broke of its closing, it came as a shock to many who were not familiar with the school, but they had been in trouble for years. The school offered classes that weren’t approved, paid out money that it didn’t actually have to instructors, and made promises it couldn’t keep. Accreditors put the school warning status, threatening the loss of federal funding. The school continued to make poor decisions, over spend, hire teachers who were not qualified, and give out federal loans that they should not have granted.

By the time word spread of the closure, the school had loaned out and promised large amounts of money that they did not have to students. Then they wanted the federal government to bail them out. When the federal government refused, due to lack of compliance with accreditation, the school was so far in debt that it closed its doors.

The leadership of the school was convinced that it could play by its own rules, but to their surprise, the poor decision-making, leadership, and unethical decision-making lead to the permanent closing of the university. They had stopped pursuing the original vision of the school and the One for whom the school was established. –Jim L. Wilson and Eric Gibbs

2020 was an unbelievably bad season for the Chicago Bears. They found themselves losing in the wild card round of the playoffs into which they had inadvertently backed through many losses. All this tragedy happened even though coach Matt Nagy made the difficult decision earlier in the season of laying down his laminated chart, and allowing his offensive coordinator, Bill Lazor, to call plays for the offense during the games. Nagy had observed back in November, “When you’re in this position that we’re in right now you want to make sure that you’re looking for solutions.” That desperate desire to start achieving some victories lead Nagy to take the uncomfortable step of delegating this important task.

Nagy was looking for a way to help navigate his Bears through their difficult circumstances towards winning more games, even if that meant sharing more of his coaching role with one of his subordinates. Unfortunately, however, it did not really end up producing the desired results. —Jim L. Wilson and Jon R. Pennington

Numbers 11:17 (CSB)

Then I will come down and speak with you there. I will take some of the Spirit who is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it by yourself.

LEADERSHIP

In Leaders Eat Last, Simon Sinek writes, “Leadership is not a license to do less; it is a responsibility to do more. And that’s the trouble. Leadership takes work. It takes time and energy. The effects are not always easily measured and they are not always immediate. Leadership is always a commitment to human beings.”

Hebrews 13:16 (CSB)

Don’t neglect to do what is good and to share, for God is pleased with such sacrifices.
