HOMOGENEITY
"Birds of a feather," the saying goes, "flock
together." Not exactly Scripture, but nonetheless is deeply ingrained in
the philosophy of the Church Growth Movement.
No doubt, the principle works, but is pragmatism the
ultimate test? Can a church "target" one group and ignore another?
Homogeneity doesn't have to be drawn along sociographic or
demographic lines. Why not just target sinners as a group?
In his book, In Search of Authentic Faith, Steve Rabey
wrote:
"While we should thank God for the men and women who
are doing subcultural ministry with people who have been ignored or
marginalized by the mainstream church, their work also raises questions about
growing divisions in the body of Christ. What, for example, would the apostle
Paul make of it all? What would subcultural ministry look like to the man who
told the Galatian believers, 'There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free,
male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians
3:28)?'"

Rabey interjects a new question, not does it work, but is it
Biblical? A question the church must wrestle with and submit to.
