A New Jersey woman is
organizing a drive to send cans of
Silly String to Iraq, because she learned that
in the age of multimillion
dollar high-tech weapons systems, the simplest
ideas can save lives. Michelle
Shriver's son who serves in Iraq told her,
troops often use the stuff to detect
trip wires around bombs. He said before troops
enter buildings they often
squirt the plastic goo, which shots strands 10
to 12 feet in length across the
room. Trip wires are nearly invisible, but if
the Silly String falls to the
ground, the troops know there are no trip wires.
If it hangs in the air, they
know they have a problem.
The military is reluctant to
talk specifics because they
don't want to tip off the insurgents. A military
spokesman said U.S. soldiers
are allowed to come up with new ways to do their
job, and commanders are given
money to buy "nonstandard supplies" if needed.
Shriver says,"If
I turn on the TV and see a soldier with a can of
this on his vest that would
make this worth it."

GOD’S OMNISCIENCE
Researchers at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology have developed a
device that can detect a person’s feelings by
bouncing wireless signals off
their body. Researchers claim the technology
is nearly 87 percent accurate,
using a measure of heartbeats to recognize
sadness, anger, pleasure, joy and
happiness. The device does not have to touch
the body to work, which means it
could be incorporated into computers or cell
phones. Researchers believe the
device could be used to measure audience
reaction to advertisements or to help
make people happier by diagnosing depression
or anxiety. —Jim L. Wilson and Jim

the Lord
said to Samuel, “Do not look at his
appearance or his stature, because I have
rejected him. Man does not see what
the Lord
sees, for man sees what
is visible, but the Lord
sees the
heart.”
