GOD'S VOICE

"My Grandpa Frachiseur raised cattle in Arkansas. As a child, I was convinced he had some sort of magical power over cattle. I developed this theory while riding with Grandpa in his dirty green, creaky pickup truck through the pasture to feed the cows. After easing over the cattleguard, we bounced along the rutted road leading to the barn. Most times the pastures were empty not a bull, cow, or calf in sight. Then Grandpa would lean out the window and bellow a unique sound. "As soon as Grandpa sounded the call, cattle appeared from every direction, trotting out of the woods and up from the river bottoms. They formed lines behind the pickup as we continued our bouncy ride toward the barn. When we stopped, the herd of cattle faced us like a mob at the cafeteria following a Sunday morning church service.

"As I grew older, I discovered that Grandpa's distinctive call, rather than magic, lured those cattle. They associated that sound with the one who fed and cared for them. They recognized Grandpa's voice and looked for him every time they heard it"

Getting Ahead by Staying Behind, John Kramp, p.132 Illustration by Jim L. Wilson

Though Jesus spoke of sheep instead of cattle, his illustration was the same. "The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep. The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will runaway from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice"(John 10:2-5).

GOD’S VOICE

Eddie Fray is one of four inventors of the KidSmart Vocal Smoke Detector. He says the idea for a smoke detector that allows parents to record a message telling young children what to do in case of a fire came from an unusual source. Fray says, “I dreamed there was a fire in the house and the smoke alarm told the kids to get out.” He adds, “I almost went back to sleep, but I decided to get up and write it down.”

Fray, a partner, and two other men teamed up to patent a talking smoke alarm. They believe a detector with a message recorded by a familiar voice will be less confusing to children. He says they often panic and hide when they hear a conventional smoke alarm, sometimes fearing they may have done something wrong to set it off.

I think Fray is right, a child is more likely to follow the familiar voice of their parent than respond to an alarm. In the same way, it is easy for believers to recognize the voice of God, and follow Him when He speaks.

GOD'S VOICE

What does God's voice sound like?

When a new audio version of the New Testament on CD is released this fall, it will feature the voice of actor Samuel L. Jackson as the voice of God. Producers told a British newspaper they felt Jackson's deep, authorative voice was perfect for the role of God. They also said, "Scores of other black actors, musicians, and athletes will also figure, but Samuel was deemed to be the perfect person to play God."

Physically, I don't have a clue what God's voice sounds like. But spiritually, I know. It sounds exactly like it did the last time I heard it.

John 10:27 (NIV) "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me."

GOD’S VOICE

A voice-over actor sang "Let it Go,” a popular song from the Disney animated movie Frozen, using various Disney characters. The video reached over 2.5 million views and generated many positive feedbacks. Many of the viewers guessed which of their favorite Disney characters sang parts of the song, from Winnie the Pooh, to Mickey Mouse. How could they guess the voices? That’s easy, they had heard them many times before.

John 10:1-4 (ESV) “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. (2) But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. (3) To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. (4) When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
