FOUNDATION

During his sermon at the Washington National Cathedral on the National Day of Prayer and Remembrances for the victims of the terrorist bombings on the World Trade Center in New York, NY and on the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., Dr. Billy Graham drew a parallel between the destruction in New York and society.

"When damaged, those buildings eventually plummeted to the ground, imploding in a moment's time. Yet underneath the debris is a foundation that was not destroyed," Graham said.

Only a strong foundation will survive the attacks from the enemy.

1 Cor. 3:11 NIV "For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ."

FOUNDATION

Glenda lost her home. It didn't burn. Termites and rats didn't take over. Glenda and her family had to abandon their home because of sink holes.

Huge areas of their property began to sink inward, and one sink hole made a section of the house's foundation crumble. Their house began to break apart because the foundation was collapsing. You can replace a ruined roof. You can repair a destroyed wall. In some cases you can even restore a burned home. But if the foundation crumbles there's no hope for the house.

Matthew 7:24-27 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock. [25] "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded upon the rock. [26] "And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not act upon them, will be like a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand. [27] "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house; and it fell, and great was its fall."

FOUNDATION

Shanghai, the largest city in China is facing a unique problem due to ongoing development. City leaders have decided to drastically decrease the construction of new high-rise buildings because the weight of steel and concrete is causing the city to sink.

Parts of Shanghai are sinking at the rate of one and half centimeters a year. Engineers say the cause is a massive building boom, which has transformed the skyline of the city over the past ten years. Shanghai is already home to the tallest building in China. A new tower under construction will be the world’s tallest.

According to the China Daily newspaper, the tall buildings look nice but they can also cause problems. Shanghai is built on a drained swamp, and the city is gradually sinking below the level of the nearby Huang Pu River. Though the construction of new skyscrapers will be cut, the problem may be irreversible because so many buildings have already been built or are under construction.

1 Corinthians 3:10-11 NIV “By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

FOUNDATION

City Hall in Ocoee, Florida was built on a foundation of “muck and peat.” The building, which was built 20 years ago, is sinking and has detached from its porch by a gap of 4 inches. City officials are hoping that the building will hit “Terra Firma,” hard earth, before the building is completely destroyed.

If only they had built their building upon a strong foundation. —Jim L. Wilson and Brian Vogelesang

Matthew 7:24-25 (ESV) “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. (25) And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
