FIGHT OF FAITH
Jeff Struecker knows exactly when God called him to be an
Army Chaplain. He was in Mogadishu, Somalia, with rocket-propelled grenades
flying though the air, barely missing his Humvee. Struecker and his fellow
rangers and Delta force commandos were fighting for their lives in a city that
had become a maze of gunfire and grenades.
Eighteen American soldiers and hundreds of Somalis died in
the seventeen-hour battle in October 1993. The fighting erupted when Army
rangers headed out on a mission to capture a local warlord and Somalis shot
down an army helicopter.
Struecker says, “ In the middle of that firefight, I had to
decide whether I believed what I say I believe. And when I finally answered
that question, my faith gave me the strength to fight the rest of the night.”
Today, Struecker is an Army Chaplain with an airborne field
artillery unit in North Carolina. He says the experience created in him a
“bullet-proof faith” and an “unwavering loyalty to his fellow soldiers and to
his country.” He says, “ In the event my soldiers were getting into a plane
tonight, I would stand right with them, absolutely.”

of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession
in the presence of many witnesses.”
