What effect do unreasonable
expectations have on people?
Do they motivate them to excel or do they
discourage them?
A group of psychologists
recently conducted a study
to find the answer to these questions. They
gathered a group of undergraduate
students to see if they would perform at
different levels wearing a sweater
or a swimsuit. Though they were in private,
individual quarters, where
no one could see them, the 42 women in the study
performed significantly
lower on an advanced math test wearing the
swimsuits than when they took
the test wearing a sweater.
The clothes had little or no
effect on the 40 men
they tested. Why the stark difference?
“Society’s unreasonable expectations
for women’s appearance.”
Psychologist Joni Johnston,
author of Appearance Obsession
said, “Girls who have poor body images
consistently report that it keeps
them from focusing on schoolwork and other
things,” Johnson said, “It’s
that self-consciousness, all that worrying, that
really does take away
energy from other things.”

In "Encouraging the Heart",
Kouzes and Posner write,
"People tend to live up, or down, to our
expectations of them. Hundreds
of research studies have since been conducted to
test this notion, and
they all clearly demonstrate that people tend to
act consistently with
our expectations."

Romans 8:19-21(NASB) 19 For the anxious longing
of the creation waits
eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. 20
For the creation was subjected
to futility, not willingly, but because of Him
who subjected it, in hope
21 that the creation itself also will be set
free from its slavery to corruption
into the freedom of the glory of the children of
God.
EXPECTATIONS
On October 13, 2012 Los Angeles experienced a
once in a lifetime opportunity.
It was the space shuttle Endeavor transported
southbound on Crenshaw Blvd
and then eastbound on Martin Luther King Blvd.
The crowds were enormous
and people came from miles around. Many slept in
their cars overnight to
experience this sight. The people were full of
excitement and enthusiasm
when they got their glimpse of the shuttle as it
slowly edged its way to
its destination, the California Science Center.
.
One could imagine a similar sight when Jesus
entered Jerusalem on the
back of a donkey.—Jim L. Wilson and Kelvin Akins
Matthew 21:4-11 (HCSB) (4) This took place so
that what was spoken through
the prophet might be fulfilled: (5) Tell
Daughter Zion, “Look, your King
is coming to you, gentle, and mounted on a
donkey, even on a colt, the
foal of a beast of burden.” (6) The disciples
went and did just as Jesus
directed them. (7) They brought the donkey and
the colt; then they laid
their robes on them, and He sat on them. (8) A
very large crowd spread
their robes on the road; others were cutting
branches from the trees and
spreading them on the road. (9) Then the crowds
who went ahead of Him and
those who followed kept shouting: Hosanna to the
Son of David! He who comes
in the name of the Lord is the blessed One!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!
(10) When He entered Jerusalem, the whole city
was shaken, saying, “Who
is this?” (11) And the crowds kept saying, “This
is the prophet Jesus from
Nazareth in Galilee!”
