ETERNITY

Every year, in the Nevada Desert, pagans gather to perform ritualistic dances in front of a 52-foot wooden statue of a man. The climax of the anything goes, clothing optional festival comes when the statue is set ablaze and the participates mock the Christian belief that they will all one day burn in hell.

—Religion Today September 7, 2000 Illustration by Jim L. Wilson

It is too bad that these people make light of a tragic fact. Without Christ, people will perish for eternity in hell.

Romans 6:23 KJV For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

ETERNITY

In an interview with Reader’s Digest, Barbara Streisand repeated something a friend had told her about eternity. “Someone said to me, hopefully when you die and go to heaven and God is at the gate and he asks you a question, the question is not, how well were you loved, but how well did you love?”

—Reader’s Digest, October 2003, p. 94 Illustration by Jim L. Wilson

Though I believe I have a lot of room in my heart to love others, I’m glad I don’t have to count on that ability as my ticket into heaven. Instead, it is quite the opposite; it is how well God loved me.

John 3:16 KJV “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Things are not always as they seem. Some safety experts are saying that some safety devices on our cars are actually "unsafe" under certain conditions. Air bags are responsible for saving many lives but, they can also increase the odds of a child dying in a crash.

Anti—lock brakes are supposed to help drivers avoid accidents. But these brakes don't always enhance safety. If a driver "pumps" the brakes, they do not work

Proverbs 16:25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

It is God's judgement, not our reasoning that determines our eternal destiny.

ETERNITY

Time has a way of changing our perspective. In the early 1940's Ruth Gruber was working, on behalf of the government, to promote the Alaskan territory to homesteaders. She traveled by truck, dogsled, and when she was lucky, by plane.

In 1942, she was about to board a plane headed for Nome, when she received a message from the Secretary of the Interior. This was before the day of satellite pagers-it wasn't an instant message, the telegraph operator had to decode it for her. The bush pilot became impatient and told her he couldn't wait any longer, the plane would have to leave without her.

Gruber was in a bind, she couldn't walk away from a message from the Secretary of the Interior, she had to wait. I'm sure she wasn't happy to miss her flight and to have to arrange other transportation to Nome. The impatient pilot couldn't wait just a few more minutes, which ended up saving her life. Soon after taking off, the plane crashed into a mountain, killing everyone on board.

—Biography, Sept 2001, p. 72 Illustration by Jim L. Wilson

For a while, Gruber was wishing the operator would hurry up. Later, she was glad he didn't. If time can change our perspective like that, what does eternity do? Wealth, status, position-they all become unimportant when viewed through the perspective of eternity.

James 1:9-11 NASB "But let the brother of humble circumstances glory in his high position; [10] and let the rich man glory in his humiliation, because like flowering grass he will pass away. [11] For the sun rises with a scorching wind, and withers the grass; and its flower falls off, and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so too the rich man in the midst of his pursuits will fade away."

In a recent poll by the Pew Research Center, the age where the average person considers someone “old” is 68. However, there is a generational difference in the perception of who is old. The younger people are, the sooner they believe old age sets in. For those in the survey from ages 18-29, old age starts at 60. For 30-49 year-olds it is almost a decade later at 69. Those 50-64 don’t think old age begins until 72. If you are over 65, senior citizen status is delayed until 74.
-- USA Today, June 29, 2009 p. 5D Illustration by Jim L. Wilson and Rodger Russell
While the attempt to appear, feel, and act young is a continual battle among the aging population, the truth remains, everyone who lives long enough gets old. Ponce de Leon may have searched long and hard for the fountain of youth but he never found it. There is only one solution to living beyond old age and it not found in a fountain of youth, but in the living water.
John 4:10, 14 (NKJV) “Jesus answered and said to her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.’ (14) “but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."

If there is anything that gets a couple thinking about religion, it is the thoughts of the children they are responsible for. That is true, even for the world’s richest couple.
Melinda Gates is Catholic, goes to church, and wants to raise daughter Jennifer that way. "But she offered me a deal," Gates says. "If I start going to church--my family was Congregationalist--then Jennifer could be raised in whatever religion I choose."
So how did Gates respond? He admitted that he is tempted, because he would prefer she have a religion that "has less theology and all" than Catholicism, but he has not yet taken up the offer. "Just in terms of allocation of time resources, religion is not very efficient," he explains. "There's a lot more I could be doing on a Sunday morning."
That is a very interesting comment from the man who gave us free cell and video solitaire. The thing to remember is we don’t invest Sunday morning for time, but for eternity. Hopefully Jennifer will realize, as does her mother, that there is more to life than efficiency. Bill Gates may be able to leave Jennifer millions of dollars, but a relationship with Christ will give her millions of years, as a beginning, in eternity.

The June 2009 edition of Sky Magazine, the official in flight publication of Delta Airlines, has a section about New York City.  In it, they interview famous New Yorkers about their favorite places in the City that never sleeps.  A very self-absorbed Donald Trump answers almost every question with a property or a place that he owns.
Best Meeting Place – My Office in the Trump Towers
Best Private Club – The Trump National Golf Club
Favorite restaurants – He names two in the Trump Towers
Favorite mode of transportation in NYC – My limousine
Favorite airport – LaGuardia, where my jet is
Favorite clothier – Macy’s where you will find The Trump Signature Collection
Favorite recreational activity – Golf at one of my beautiful worldwide courses
Favorite spot in Central Park – well evidently he doesn’t own any part of Central Parkbecause his answer is Wollman Rink.
It could be that Mr.  Trump is using the interview as an opportunity to advertise his diverse businesses. He has plenty of them.  Was he to be asked, “What is your hope for eternity?” I am sure nothing with the name Trump in it will be the right answer.

ETERNITY

For years, some scientists have suggested including an additional dimension of space into their research because it helps reconcile theories involving electromagnetism and gravity. Physicist Itzhak Bars, of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Southern California thinks adding another dimension of time (other than the one we are used to) may solve the problem. Bars suggests time is not only a simple line from the past to the future in a four dimensional world consisting of three dimensions of space and one of time. The physicist envisions the passage of history as curves embedded in six dimensions, with four of space and two of time.

Some physicists consider Bars’ theory a bit unusual, but he believes the Bible offers support for his theory. In 2 Peter 2:8 the apostle states that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. He notes Peter goes a step further, implying that in the spiritual realm a moment is like a thousand years and a thousand years like a moment. The concepts could suggest that God exists in a timeless dimension where past, present and future merge and linear time does not exist. Other passages such as, the first verses from the Old Testament Book of Jeremiah indicate that before he was born, the prophet existed and was consecrated to God’s service. Bars plans to conduct experiments to explore his theory, which could produce findings offering new insight into human existence and how God interacts with the world.

Science and Theology don’t often complement each other, but this research could yield some interesting insights. No matter what Bars finds, God always has time for you.

2 Peter 3:8-10 (NAB) “But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day. (9) The Lord does not delay his promise, as some regard "delay," but he is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. (10) But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be found out.”

ETERNITY

A Roman snack shop closed down. Well, actually the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79 closed it down when it buried it in volcanic ash. That was almost 2000 years ago, but in March, after having been excavated and renovated, it reopened again for tourists to the ancient town of Pomeii.

--World April 24, 2010 p.12 Illustration by Jim L. Wilson and Rodger Russell

Two-thousand years between closing and reopening is almost an eternity. But in the light of eternity it is only the blink of an eye. The same God, who was there when the volcano shut it down, is the God who rules over the world it now occupies. God is the same now as he was then. God’s kindness has not changed in the last 2000 years nor for all eternity shall it change. It is eternal.

Isaiah 54:8 (NASB77) "In an outburst of anger I hid My face from you for a moment; But with everlasting lovingkindness I will have compassion on you," Says the LORD your Redeemer.

David Murdock is an 87-year-old billionaire who has spent $500 million building a research campus in North Carolina to explore his conviction that they key to longer life is a low-fat diet rich in vegetables, fruit, and antioxidants. “I never have anything go wrong,” says Murdock. “Never had a backache. Never had a headache. Never had anything else.” Murdock is certain he can live to be 125-years-old.

One thing is certain. Whether Mr. Murdock makes it to 125 or dies before he is 90, he will experience death.

The last typewriter factory closed its doors in Mumbai, India on April 25, 2011. The company managed to sell some 10,000 typewriters a year for the last few years of its existence. The drop off in orders for new machines was dramatic enough that it was no longer a viable business. The factory closed and now typewriters are no longer being produced en masse anywhere in the world.

God's covenant with Moses was one that became obsolete, but now we have an everlasting covenant that will never cease production.

On September 23, 1846 Astronomers determined that the newly discovered object in the sky was a planet. They named it Neptune. 165 years later, in July 2011 Neptune completes its first journey around the sun since its discovery. One year on Neptune is like 165 earth years.

Wellington R. Burt hated his family. When he died, in 1919, his will stipulated that his estate was to be held until his last grandchild was dead for 21 years. In a 60 minutes interview on CBS, Walter Isaacson, the author of the biography Steve Jobs, tells about Steve Jobs talking about God. Jobs said, "Sometimes I believe in God, sometimes I don't. I think it's 50-50 maybe. But ever since I've had cancer, I've been thinking about it more. And I find myself believing a bit more. I kind of-- maybe it's 'cause I want to believe in an afterlife. That when you die, it doesn't just all disappear. The wisdom you've accumulated. Somehow it lives on." Then he paused for a second and he said, "Yeah, but sometimes I think it's just like an on-off switch. Click and you're gone." He said and paused again, and he said, "And that's why I don't like putting on-off switches on Apple devices."

In Emotionally Healthy Spirituality: Unleash A Revolution In Your Life in Christ, Peter Scazzero writes, “We are to live our lives as the rest of the world marrying, experiencing sorrow and joy, buying things and using them but always with awareness that these things in themselves are not our lives. We are to be marked by eternity, free from the dominating power of things.”

2045, The Year Man Becomes Immortal shouts the cover of Time magazine! Of course that is a couple thousand years late. Jesus already promised that those who believe in Him will never die. Paul McCartney, one of the four original Beatles, was one of the most famous musicians among the generation of baby boomers. Now in his 70’s he is a virtual unknown to the younger generations. That is the story of all but a very few individuals. The preacher said it well in Ecclesiastes.

Ecclesiastes 1:11 (ESV) There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to be among those who come after.

Fame and riches are fleeting. The only things that last are the treasures stored up in heaven.

Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV) “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

How long is eternity? Residents of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan have discovered that it is not as long as they thought. The grandson of evangelist Billy Graham gave an update on his grandfather’s condition, and relayed an important message during a meeting of Christian Broadcast professionals. Will Graham told the crowd that his grandfather is in condition that is natural for someone who is 95 years old. Billy Graham gave what many believe is his last sermon during a taped segment of the video “The Cross” that was part of “My Hope for America” campaign. 26,000 churches originally signed up to participate in the campaign, but it quickly expanded and many estimate 4 million people heard the Gospel through the outreach. Will Graham said his desire was to tell people that Jesus is the one hope and one answer they are seeking. Regarding his grandfather, Graham said, “This is what my grandfather has said concerning his own death, he said, ‘One day you will hear that Billy Graham has died. Don’t believe it. On that day I will be more alive than I ever will be.’” Graham added, ”And that’s the truth and that why he preaches, because this life is only the setup for the life to come.”—Jim L. While 47 years is not eternity, there are times it may feel like it. One toddler got possession of his mom’s cell phone. He repeatedly entered the wrong passcode. He did it so many times that when mom got home she discovered the phone’s security protection had disabled the phone for 25 million minutes. Apple store workers told her she would either have to wait 25 million minutes to unlock the phone or reboot it, erasing all of the data. 25 million minutes is 47 years, a long time to wait to use the phone, but just a blink of an eye in the long scheme of eternity.

But each one is to be careful how he builds on it. For no one can lay any other foundation than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, each one’s work will become obvious. For the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work. If anyone’s work that he has built survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, he will experience loss, but he himself will be saved—but only as through fire.”

When a person dies, their loved ones who are left behind want to find ways to remember them. In Cleveland, Ohio a Father-son duo, Michael and Kyle Sherwood have started a company to help. Their company, Save My Ink Forever, proposes to skin the tattoos off the corpses and turn them into framed artwork. The process takes about three months, and the framed final product—displayed behind “museum-quality UV glass”—starts at $1,599 for a 5-by-5-inch tattoo. The idea is for people to “feel comforted being able to see that piece of their loved one as a constant reminder of them,” Kyle said.

ETERNITY

The makers of the board game Monopoly have created a new version of the game that promises to make the seemingly endless game even longer.  The new board has an outer track and an inner track containing 96 spaces, compared to 40 on the original. There are 66 properties, 12 railroads and six utilities. The object of the game is for one person to own every possible property, railroad and utility. Players can keep going even if they are bankrupt and they can also cut up their money to keep going. The new game only has one die so there are no extra turns from rolling doubles. Amazon is the exclusive distributor for the new game, and they say it is so popular that it is currently unavailable. They hope to have new copies soon.—Jim L. Wilson and Jim Sandell.
