CONCERN
Theater owners in the nation of New Zealand are looking
into the possibility of using mobile phone jamming technology to eliminate
mid-movie calls, text messaging, and cell phone rage among patrons. Spokesman
for the national motion Pictures Exhibitors Association, Duncan Mackensie
said jammers could be used in the 200-member group's theaters because cell
phones were such a "huge disruption" to moviegoers.
Mackensie says the biggest problem is not teenager
cell phone users, because they are usually cooperative when asked to turn
off their phones. The worst offenders he had seen were middle-aged woman
who answered their phones during a movie and continued to talk and even
get aggravated when asked to turn off their cell phones or leave.
He said he has had to break up incidents of "cell
phone rage" which have turned nasty. He had to defuse one incident when
a man threatened to hit two students sitting on opposite sides of the theater
texting each other.
Mackensie says if they introduce jammers, people expecting
emergency messages could leave their phones or pagers at the reception
desk. He defended the association's plans saying, "Even texting creates
so much light and it's unfair to expect that people should have to put
up with it."

CONCERN FOR OTHERS
When the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA championship,
the names of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal were in the news a lot. A
name no one heard during the recent championships was John Amaechi.
John is not a franchise player who has had the impact
of players like Shaq or Kobe, but he brings strong play and a rare concern
for his teammates to his team.
During a recent NBA off season, the defending champion
Lakers pursued John Amaechi with an offer that might have given him a starting
job as power forward, paring him with MVP Shaquille O’Neal. The Lakers’
impressive offer would have paid Amaechi 2.2 million dollars in the first
year of a six-year,17 million dollar deal.
Instead of jumping at the chance to become an NBA
superstar, Amaechi ignored the advice of his agent, his best friend, and
family members. Instead of moving to the Lakers, John re-signed with his
team, the Orlando Magic. John said, “Against my own best financial sense,
I’m re-signing because I think the Magic need me.”
Our decisions do impact other people. Amaechi considered
the needs of others first when making an important decision.

When 12-year-old Cade Pope of Yukon, Oklahoma wanted to find a favorite
NFL team, he decided the best way to choose one would be to write them,
all 32 NFL teams. He spent three weeks writing letter to the owner
of every team asking them for guidance on which team he should make ‘his
team.’ He explained that he didn’t live in state with a team and was finding
it hard to decide otherwise. Cade hoped to hear from several teams, but
only one took the time to respond, and the decision was easy. Cade
received a package with a replica Carolina Panthers helmet signed by linebacker
Luke Kuechly and a handwritten note from Jerry Richardson, the team’s owner
and founder. Richardson said the team would be honored if the Panther’s
became Cade’s favorite team, and promised to make him proud by the classy
way they would represent him. Since the Panthers take fan mail seriously,
Cade says is likely to become an all-star fan. He added, ‘If this is the
only team that responds to me, I’m a Carolina Panthers fan.’
