Paul Herold is trying his best not to be elected to the City
Council of Blaine, Minnesota. He entered the primary several months ago, but
then found a new job that will not leave him enough time to properly serve his
constituents. He missed the deadline for removing his name from the ballot, so
Herold worked hard not to get any votes.
His plan failed, even after Herold sent a letter to the
local paper pleading for nonsupport, and offered to drive friends and neighbors
to the polls to vote for anyone but him. He finished second in a three-way race
and now faces the incumbent in November.
Herold is urging everyone to vote for his opponent. He says
there are only two ways to get off the ballot, die or move out of the district.
He says he could refuse to serve if elected, but that would force the city to
hold a special election costing thousands and he doesn't want to do that.
Reflecting on Herold's dilemma, City Clerk Jane Cross said,
"Unfortunately, once he's on the ballot, there's
nothing we can do."
