CHOICE/ABORTION

January 22, 2002 marked the twenty-ninth anniversary of the Supreme Courts Roe Versus Wade Decision which legalized abortion. After all those years, the debate over the procedure still rages. There is also an ongoing effort to examine why women have abortions in the first place. Wendy Wright, spokesperson for Concerned Women For America says some interesting things are being observed. She says, Its almost a unanimous statement…among all (women who have had an abortion) that they felt like they had no choice. Wright noted that was ironic, considering the abortion movement is based on the idea of choice.

A 1998 study by the Guttmacher Institute of 1,900 women seeking abortions found the number one reason these women wanted an abortion was either they could not afford a child or felt unready for the responsibility. Forty-two percent of women cited those two reasons. The Guttmacher Institute labeled other reasons as social problems. These concerns included life changes (16%), trouble in the relationship with the baby's father or fear of single parenthood (12%), or lack of maturity/too young (11%).

An analysis by Catholics for Choice supports that conclusion. They found in study after study in many countries of the world, women who have abortions would have continued the pregnancy if circumstances had been different. They are often poor and feel they can not provide a decent life for the child. Many are concerned that the men in their lives are not prepared to love or commit to women and children.

Pro-Life activists say the single most important factor in the decision women make is the attitude of her partner, the baby's father It is sad to see so many human lives destroyed in the name of choice, especially when the choice is in name only.

Jesus offers a choice that preserves human lives. He offers life to all who will put their trust in Him. Jesus lovingly chose to become a sacrifice, so others might live.

John 15:16 NIV "You did not choose, but I chose you, and appointed you to go and bear fruit.. Real Choice puts the concerns of others first."

CHOICE

Technology has its good and bad sides. Technology has placed pornography at the fingertips of the young and old alike.  On the other hand, some people are making good use of modern technology for spreading the Word of God and some humanitarian purposes.

How it is used, is a matter of choice.

Proverbs 3:35 (NIV) “The wise inherit honor, but fools get only shame.”
