CELIBACY
In her book, Born Again Virgins, Wendy Keller argues
that the unmarried who have had a time of sexual activity will benefit from
celibacy. She was joined by Doug Carroll, a writer for the Arizona Republic and
E. Jean Carroll, an advice columnist for Elle magazine on CBS's The Early Show
to discuss the book.
Jean Carroll disagrees with Keller. She said, "Other
than duct taping yourself to the radiator to take yourself out of circulation [celibacy
won't work.] I think it is denying yourself, it is setting rules for yourself
and it is giving up things that are way too important, for really no good
reason." She went on to describe the celibacy movement as "dim
witted, corset wearing 18th century behavior."
Doug Carroll (no relation to Jean) has a ten year old son
and was divorced in 1997 and supports Keller's assertion that celibacy is a
valuable alternative for the unmarried. He and his fiancé are engaged to be
married in October of 2000 and are saving sex for marriage. He said, "Sex
can arrest the development of a relationship, giving us a false sense of
closeness to someone. Just because we're close physically doesn't mean we're in
even the same area code emotionally or spiritually."
