A new study has found that
though parents say they
want to improve their skills, few look to the
Bible for guidance. Most
parents say they draw primarily from their own
personal experience when
it comes to raising their children. The study
found 96 per cent ignore
seminars and books about parenting. Only 20 per
cent of parents said they
received guidance from sacred texts such as the
Bible. An even smaller
group of parents said they look to church as a
source for parenting parental
guidance. Sixty percent of parents said they
preferred to rely on their
own experiences growing up as a guide for their
own parenting style.
Scott McConnell, associate
director of LifeWay Research
and co-author of a new book called The Parenting
Adventure, said “The only
source of advice that a majority of parents use
a lot is their own experience.
It’s as if parents are collectively reverting to
a popular toddler saying,
’I will do it myself.’”

ADVICE
Elohim and Michelle, a couple
from California needed a break
from isolating at home with their four children.
When
they visited their Marriage and Family
Therapist, Yashica Budde, she outfitted them
with full body suits, face
covering, and protective gloves, and sent them
to her “rage room.”Not
every therapist sees smash therapy as a
valid treatment, but Budde said before the
pandemic, rooms where patrons paid
to destroy things were more of a lark where
people went to blow off steam after
a breakup. Now she believes these rooms are a
valuable therapy to release
pandemic stress. When asked, Elohim said, “We
are believers, so we use God,
obviously, as our main foundation.”He
added, “But, I’m not opposed to breaking some
stuff to relieve some
tension.”—Jim L. Wilson and Jim Sandell
