ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Super Bowl XLI made cultural history because it was the
first time teams coached by African Americans faced each other in the big game.
It was also a big day for Indianapolis Coach Tony Dungy who became one of only a
handful of men who have won the Super Bowl Title as both a player and a coach.
Though Coach Dungy's teams had always been in the hunt, they had never made an
appearance in a Championship Game until this year. The coach made it clear
through football's post-season; his accomplishments took a back seat to another
consideration.
Following the Colts 29-17 victory over the Bears, Dungy met
Bear's coach Lovie Smith in the center of the field and hugged him. During the
trophy presentation, Dungy expressed what was in his heart. He said, "I'm
proud to be the first African American coach to win this. But again, more than
anything Lovie Smith and I are not only African America but also Christian
coaches, showing you can do it the Lord's way. We're more proud of that."
