ABUNDANCE
Though 41 of percent, Fremont
California's 209,000
residents earn more than $100,000 a year, wealth
cannot ensure their protection.
Prompted by too many false alarms and too little
money, the Fremont police
department says they will begin ignoring most of
the burglar alarms they
receive. The department says they will follow
the example of police in
cities such as Salt Lake City, Milwaukee, and
Las Vegas that have similar
policies about alarms.
Fremont police estimate false
alarms cost the city
about $600,000 a year. The department says due
to budget cuts, they will
only respond if there is additional verification
such as video feed of
a crime occurring or an eye-witness report.
Fremont Police chief Craig
Steckler said, "We had
7,000 alarm calls last year and 66 of those were
burglary." He added, "What
do you want us to do?"
